Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
What is Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)?
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder is a condition where your legs and sometimes arms twitch periodically during sleep. This often causes you to wake up, not get a good night's sleep, and then be sleepy during the day.
Is this the same as Restless Legs Syndrome?
No. While most people with Restless Legs Syndrome have periodic leg movements during sleep, the conditions are considered to be separate.
What causes PLMD?
As with Restless Legs Syndrome, there is usually no identifiable cause, although diabetes and low iron are risk factors.
Are treatments available?
Yes, treatments are available so you don't have to suffer from these symptoms, especially if they're affecting your quality of sleep and quality of life. If your doctor finds that you have low iron levels in your blood, iron supplements may help. Your doctor may also consider other prescription medication treatments.
